Finding the Right Wedding Poems

Wedding poems are a lovely way to personalize a wedding ceremony. Wedding poems can take the place of a reading, or they can complement a reading. Some couples will just take portions of a wedding poem that applies to them and add it to their ceremony.

Using Wedding Poems

Couples put their wedding plans together in any number of different ways. Some couples are really into having a traditional wedding. These couples typically leave the readings up to the pastor or priest. Other couples are very new age. Rather than hire a priest, they put together the wedding themselves, choosing every reading, saying and truism in the ceremony. Most couples fall right in the middle. They get some help from their pastor and add sayings or poems that they feel fit their relationship and their personality.

So, if you're going to choose your own readings or wedding poems, what should you look for? A wedding poem should reflect your relationship. If the poem is about waiting your entire life for your true love, but neither of you felt you waited forever to find the one you love, don't choose that poem. Sit down with your partner and discuss what kinds of things you want to talk about. Is friendship at the top your list? Laughter? Support? Sharing your life with God? Once you've decided what you want the focus of the poem to be, start looking for poems.

The Internet is full of wedding poems. Some of them are cheesy and some are sweet. However, there are enough poems on the Internet that you should be able to find a poem that fits your criteria. You don't have to read the entire poem either. Just read the section that you feel best describes your relationship.

When to Read It

There are a couple of ways to read your poem. You can have the person marrying you read the poem. You can also ask a special attendant such as a grandparent, to read the poem. Some couples will each choose a poem and read it to their soon-to-be spouse during the ceremony.

The poem doesn't have to be read. You can put your wedding poem at the bottom of your wedding program. This allows the guests to read the wedding poems on their own.
