Family guilt tripping about not attending destination wedding?
My SIL is having a destination wedding in February in Mexico, and it would be nearly impossible to go. My husband (her brother) is active military, and we just had a baby last month. Here are the reasons we're not going:
1. Airfare and room costs
2. Don't want to put baby through traveling ordeal
3. Taking vacation days going someplace we don't want to go
4. Risk something happening to husband- US soldiers are advised not to go to MX
His family thinks we're being ridiculous and are constantly guilt tripping us into going, even though we already said no. They've even said it's not important if I and the baby don't go (!), as long as hubby goes, they'll be happy. They've even offered to help out with his costs, even if he can only be there for a day! Do you see how fanatical these people are?
We've made our decision- how do we get them to back off?
You guys are right- prior to making her wedding plans, SIL called my husband and asked him if he'd be able to leave the country. He told her chances were slim to none; she took this to mean if the family leaned on him hard enough, he'd go.
And no offense to the men here who clap their hands and squeal in delight when they have to go to a wedding, but my husband is not one of them. Like most normal men, he thinks having to attend a wedding is akin to gouging his eyes out, especially when the terms "beach chic" and "casual elegance" come into play. Years ago, as a single guy, he chose not to attend his other sister's long distance wedding for similar reasons. While he loves his sisters, he doesn't daydream about the day he can attend their weddings.
