Christian Wedding Vows

The Exchange Of Wedding Vows

The wedding vows are a solemn promise between the groom and bride. In front of witnesses, the groom and bride take turns to tell their wedding vows. There are hundreds of wedding vows. The wedding vow may be religious, traditional, interfaith, or personalized.

Traditionally, the priest asks a series of questions to the groom and bride. Facing each other and holding hands with each other, the groom and bride take turns to do the wedding vows.

Here is an example of traditional Christian wedding vow.
Priest: Do you (Name), take (Name), to be your wife
Groom: I do
Priest: Do you (Name), take (Name), to be your husband
Bride: I do

Here is another example in which the groom and bride take turns to read, or say.
I, (Name),
Take you, (Name),
To be my (wife/husband);
To have and to hold,
From this day forward,
For better, for worse,
For richer, for poorer,
In sickness and in health,
To love and to cherish,
Till death do us part.

Many couple tries to memorize the wedding vows. With pressure and nerve sets in, the groom or bride peeks on the written wedding vow.

The traditional wedding vow is quick and simple. Wedding is a nerve-racking experience. Many couples are shy. And, they just want quick and simple but effective. You can rest assure that it works.

As many couples are shy, many couples like to reveal their feelings. They like to personalize the wedding vows. The couple would take time to write down their wedding vows.

To get inspiration on personalized wedding vows, you may look at romantic movies, celebrity vows, poems, and soap opera. There are over hundreds of vows such as Roman Catholic, Christian, Muslims, Greek, Jewish, and more. The wedding vow is a serious matter. And, it is worth to consider what to use.

In terms of laws, what are the origins of the traditional marriage vows? (e.g. "to have and to hold")
I am interested in reading about the traditional Christian wedding vows (Do you take this woman to be your lawfuly wedded wife etc) and their origins and influences from public law. I have tried searching the internet, but I can't find what I'm looking for. I am interested primarily in the ceremony itself, not the institution of marriage. Any help is greatly apreciated.

Reincarnation-believers ONLY, please: Do you believe that vows taken in past lives can still be binding?
I'm obviously not referring to the christian wedding vows, which explicitly state, "until death do us part", but to other formal vows, such as vows of poverty, chastity, or other similar vows that a monk or priest, etc. (from any type of religion) may have made.. I'm also including informal, "private" "vows", such as "I will never love again" or "I will never succeed", etc., as well as "spells" or curses that one may have set forth in another life (for instance, "Make Sue want to be with me forever!" Only to find out that the reincarnation of Sue has been inexplicably stalking you all your life!). What types of vows, if any, do you believe might still be valid in future lives? And *most importantly*, is there any way to "fix" or dismiss a karmic vow? If so, how? Please don't answer if you don't believe in or agree with reincarnation. This is a serious question, and I'd like *answers* from people who care about the issue, not *debates* from people who don't. Yahoo Answers is not a message board, and I'm not asking for bible quotes. Thank you. I meant to say "irrelevant" bible quotes. Please, no attempts to proselytize, it's offensive. Thanks. A learned Buddhist scholar once told me that some vows Buddhists take are for the duration of their souls- not lives. Just the idea that maybe you made a vow in another life- and it didn't have the caveat- "until death" or "for the rest of my life", what happens, in a karmic sense, to your soul if you are now not honoring that vow? Even the Bible (to mix up religious thought some more!) says that ignorance is no excuse for bad behaviour or broken promises..

Ideas from follow Pagans (or anyone who has an interesting idea to add)?
My husband to be and I are getting married on the autumnal equinox, it's going to be non-traditional with influence from both of our religions (Paganism and Christianity) but we are trying to figure out a balance. Does anyone have any ideas of what would work well without overwhelming one religion or another? We are going with a red and black dress and tux. We are thinking of doing an altar setup and mixing the normal Christian wedding vows (minus the "in god's eyes" part) with the handfasting ritual. It's hard to do this without favoring one belief or the other. I'm just asking, does anyone else has any ideas to throw in to help the two traditions run smoothly together? (it's not easy, but I know it's not impossible) I meant fellow Pagans, not follow Pagans.....grrrrrrrrrrrrr....typos suck! Captian B: Unlike most people who marry due to pressure or money, we aren't doing it "just because the world tells us to" we're doing it out of real love, not the so-called love that you throw away the next day. A L: Quite the opposite really, we are trying to honor each other's beliefs.
